Scope and Limits

Provide architectural, engineering, and construction administration services for a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) station for Dallas Love Field (DAL) to replace the existing Dallas Fire and Rescue (DFR) ARFF Station 21. The project will include a new access roadway and required utilities to provide service to the facility. The Department of Aviation plans for a new building, approximately 33,400 square feet, that will support both ARFF and the airside operations staff.

Changes and Development

The existing ARFF Station 21 was built in the 1960’s and currently houses the airport’s four (4) ARFF response apparatus with assigned crews. The new station will be able to accommodate the DFR ARFF Program's administrative personnel as well as the airport’s airside operations staff. The airport is in the process of designing the “Crossfield Taxiway” reconfiguration to comply with current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. As a result of the reconfiguration in the middle of the airfield, additional opportunities are now available to place the new ARFF Station in a more desirable location to improve the response to the airport’s runways as required to meet FAA requirements.

Deficiencies

The current ARFF Station has exceeded its useful life. Upon completion of the Crossfield
Taxiway reconfiguration, response from the existing ARFF Station is at or near the maximum response times allowed. The desire is to improve the overall response times to both airport runways.

Safety

The location of the new ARFF station will allow for efficient and timely response to aircraft emergencies.

Regulatory Requirement

Purpose

The existing ARFF Station has exceeded its useful life and needs replacement. The new station will be constructed to current building code requirements for fire stations and be located in a new location to improve the required responses to both airport runways.

Improvements

The new ARFF Station will be located approximately equidistance from the two runways and adjacent to the reconfigured crossfield taxiway, allowing ARFF trucks to respond to aircraft incidents within stipulated response times.

Environmental

A stormwater pollution prevention plan is in place to mitigate any impact from runoff during construction. 

Traffic

The contractor will utilize Shorecrest Drive and Aviation Place to access the site throughout the duration of the project.
