Urban Beehive
In April 2022, we installed our very own beehive at Dallas Executive Airport. In May, the Queen was spotted, and in just 2 months, one more box was added to accommodate the hive’s expansion and honey production.
The hive is continuing to thrive, and we had our first honey harvest. The hive was dropped back down to one box in order to help the bees regulate the temperature inside the hive with the fluctuating heat waves, and our beekeeper was able to collect a few frames of honeycomb. As you can see, half of this frame is capped with wax for storage, and the bees are continuing to work on capping the other side. The honey can still be harvested even if it is not capped as long as it is solidified and dehydrated enough for transport.
The next few cycles will be about feeding and hydrating the hive until the end of summer. After summer, we will prepare them to forage resources for storage during winter.
