Description: On November 22, 1963, Vice-President Lyndon Baines Johnson took the oath of office as 36th President of the United States, approximately two hours after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The ceremony was held in the stateroom of Air Force One, the military aircraft assigned to the President. It was parked on the concrete ramp at gate 28A of the old East Concourse of the terminal building at Dallas Love Field. United States District Judge Sarah T. Hughes of Dallas, a longtime Johnson family friend, was summoned to administer the Oath. At Love Field, Judge Hughes became the first woman in American history to give the Oath of Office to a President of the United States. The new Chief Executive, with Lady Bird Johnson on his right and Jacqueline Kennedy on his left was sworn into office at 2:38 p.m. CST. President Lyndon B. Johnson became the first U.S. President to take the oath of office west of the Mississippi River, and the only U.S. President to be sworn in aboard an aircraft at an airport.
